Book Report: Thinkertoys by Michael Michalko

I wanted to read a book on idea creation, after reading the first chapter I settled on Thinkertoys.  Thinkertoys covers the various aspects of idea generation from linear thinking to intuitive thinking.  Each section covers a specific type of thinking, broken up into chapters that give examples, and "toys" or exercises on how to implement and exercise one's mind.

What are computers anyways?

Sometimes it amuses me that with the advent of technology people are amazed by the capabilities of computers and treat it as magical. Though having learned how things work, and built, there's one underlying theme. "There's no such thing as magic". Granted computers are neat, they let us communicate, make us more effecient at work, crunch numbers really fast. But deep down the computer we see and use today is built upon layers of agreements, other than that it's just a fancy adding machine, just really really fast at it.
What do I mean? Well let's start at the basic physical level. Computers use electricity. The electrical voltage going through the computer is measured. If it's above a certain limt it's considered a 1, otherwise it's a 0. From that you get a series of 0's or 1's because of electrical voltages changing. Agreements are then made, so that a series of 0's and 1's mean something. So one sequence of 0's and 1's mean add these two numbers together. Well what are numbers? They're also another sequence of 0's and 1's. What about the fancy graphics on your display? Well that's also controlled in a similar fashion. Whoever made the monitor, and the graphics card follow a set of standards (agreements) such that if a certain series of signals is sent to the monitor it knows to color a point on the monitor a specific color, and so forth until an image is made.  As we type up our email or work on our computer billions approaching trillions of 0's and 1's are being sent through the computer.

My View on the Future

Desktop Computing
-More and more screenspace, touch screen or some other form of input
-Faster internet, fiber straight to the computer, Verizon FIOS
-More mobile devices, touch screen, projection images, 3M has a prototype projector, Apple did touch screen.

Space Tourism
-More viable, but market share might be limited, 50-50.
